Last week our precious princess turned FIVE! For about 10 months she was set on a kitty party, but when we started planning she switched to “princess and prince”, so that’s what she got. It was lots of fun to put together. Naturally we DIY’d most of it, so read on to find all the details. You can find her 4th rainbow birthday cake here and her 2nd birthday pinwheel party here.
DIY Princess Party
Our princess party included a castle cake, crown cupcake toppers, DIY crown decorating activity, crown cookie decorating and princess face painting
Find all the details below.
I used my Cricut Maker for many of these DIYs. Some of them, such as the crowns, can be done by hand too, but it’s certainly quicker and easier with a cutting machine. Party prep really is where a Cricut shines!
Castle Cake Topper with Cricut
Find the project in Cricut Design Space here.
This gorgeous castle cake topper is such an easy way to turn any cake into a princess’s castle cake. I used glitter cardstock for the back salmony layer and then Cricut’s adhesive cardstock for the blue, purple and pink layers. It really makes it so easy to put together as no glue is needed on the cardstock.
The flag was looking a little wobbly so I used a short piece of floral wire stuck on with the hot glue gun to support it.
Glue two toothpicks near each end to make it easy to insert into the cake.
Crown Cupcake Toppers with Cricut
Such a simple addition to make the cupcakes extra special.
Simply cut out a bunch of crowns from various colours of glitter cardstock and glue them onto toothpicks. Find the Design Space project here.
DIY Crown Decorating Party Activity
I’m all for party activities (if you enjoy putting them together). Something physical, such as making a crown, also acts as a party favour for all the friends to take home.
I cut out a whole bunch of different shapes and colours of crowns (link to Design Space project found here.) and set out markers and self-adhesive jewels for the party guests to secorate the crowns however they wanted to.
Once they’re done, just staple the crown together at the right size for their head.
Crown Cookie Decorating Activity
We also baked some crown shaped cookies using my favourite vanilla cookie recipe and made some plain colourful icing with icing sugar, a little hot water and some gel food colouring.
Simply place each cookie on a plate, some icing in some bowls spread out along the table and bowls of pretty sprinkles.
It’s always a hit with the kids and saves you the time trying to decorate all the cookies yourself.
Flower Lollipop Holders
What a cute way to hand out lollipops to your friends! We added a little thank you for coming note to the leaf of each flower and gave them out to each friend as they were leaving. Since we had a jumping castle, I didn’t want them to have the lollipops during the actual party.
I’ve shared the project steps as a separate blog post here.
Princess Party Boxes
Instead of a table of food, each child got their own party box with just a few treats inside. We find it’s much simpler and actually works out cheaper as you know exactly how many of each thing to get, without trying to cater for what different children will take from different plates of food.
To personalise them and prevent children from getting confused and eating a friend’s food, we cut out each child’s name from gold shimmer vinyl and added a crown (the same crowns used in the cupcake topper project linked above).
Princess Face Painting
For one final special touch my sister-in-law offered to do some face painting for whoever wanted. Face paint and some more stick on jewels are a winning combination!
Most importantly our princess enjoyed her party!
