Everyone says that time flies by when you have a child. Sometimes they are so wrong, but most of the time they are so so right! It suddenly hit me yesterday that in just four short months our little Bubs will be turning two. TWO! She has grown so much since then and is truly turning into a sweet and gentle yet determined little girl. I cannot believe that it has been that long since her first birthday party either. I figured it’s as good a time as any to share the details on how I made her mini floral smash cake and matching floral cake for the rest of the party.
It’s safe to say the smash cake was enjoyed!
Mini Floral Smash Cake
What you need:
Your favourite cake recipe or box mix
Cake tins (mine are 18cm)
Two or three ramekins
Buttercream icing
Mix of flowers and greenery (check with the florist that none are poisonous)
Floral wire
Masking tape
Cake Topper (optional, mine is from Studio Hooray)
What to do:
Mini Smash Cake
My trick for making a straight smash cake is to use ramekins. They have much straighter sides than a muffin tin and it saved me having to buy tiny cake tins.
Grease your ramekins and add some batter to them, three quarters full. Set aside.
Use the rest of the batter to make your main cake, as many layers as you’d like.
I chose to bake my main cake first, as adults would be more worried about a flopped cake, but you could bake your ramekins first too. Remember to check them after about 15 minutes, as they will bake much quicker than the larger cake.
Allow the cakes to cool and then ice with your icing.
Floral Cake Decorations
Trim down the flowers for the cake, leaving about 2cm of stem on each one. Clip floral wire into pieces roughly 8cm long. Stick the floral wire into the stem of the flower. Using masking tape, start just below the stem and wrap up the stem. Cover all the stem that will be inside the cake.
Arrange your flowers, greenery and any other decorations in the cake.
