A few weeks ago our digger obsessed boy turned two. It was good timing as they’ve been busy digging up the road around my parents house, meaning he’s had lots of digger watching fun. A construction party theme, while being much more yellow than I’m used to, was actually really fun and easy to put together.
By DIY’ing things with supplies I had at home, it also turned out fairly affordable to put it all together. We also used some of his new birthday digger truck toys, making sure they were very clean, as bowls for some of the small snacks. Apart from food, the only things I spent money on was the little mini trucks for on top of the cake, which are now one of his favourite toys for taking out with us, R13 to print the cupcake toppers page at the local printing shop and the three hard hats which I got from Builders Warehouse for R19,90 each, which we used as hard hat bowls. Our local party shops had very flimsy ones that would have crumpled almost immediately, which were basically the same price as just buying the real deal from the hardware store. Total money spent: R253 (currently converts to $16).

Give any diggers or construction truck toys you have at home a good clean and then use them as bowls. Pair them with some hard hats as bowls (details below) for the bigger food items and you’ve pretty much got as much decor as you need.
DIY Construction Party Cake
Your favourite cake recipe or cake mix box. (I used the Golden Cloud Vanilla Cake Box)
Oreos
Mini construction trucks (Extra bonus – they become toys after the cake is eaten)
2 cake topper – My tutorial can be found here
Layer the cake with either icing or caramel, but leave the top and sides un-iced.
Cut out a chunk of cake from the top piece and then ice the whole cake, including a thin layer of icing in the cut out chunk.
Crush some oreos and gently pack them into the cut out chunk. You could make your chunk much bigger than mine if you want, I just didn’t want to waste too much cake.
Sprinkle a few oreo crumbs around the top of the cut out chunk and fill up the dump truck with oreo crumbs.
Add your cake topper or candles and enjoy!
Construction Truck Cupcake Toppers – using Cricut Print then Cut
White cardstock
Toothpicks
The images I used can be found here. Another nice option is here.
Hot glue gun
Download the files from the link above. In Design Space select “Upload” and then upload the SVG file. Resize the images to the size you want them to be for your cupcake toppers. Add a small offset (optional, if you want a little white border) and then select the image and the offset and choose “flatten”. Flatten connects the offset and image, allowing you to print out the images and the outer border of the combined items (i.e.e the outer border of the offset), will become the cut line. Print out the page straight from Design Space (including the automatic registration mark rectangle) using your home printer or your local print shop and then load it into your Cricut Explore or Maker series machine to be cut.
Glue toothpicks onto the back of each topper.
DIY Hard Hat Construction Party Bowls
I got these hard hats for such a bargain! They came with an insert for actual use, but that easily just slid out. The real challenge was that the safety use instruction sticker was an absolte pain to get off. Nothing worked, so I decided to rather just cover up the sticky mess with our own vinyl stickers.
Design Space project link here.
Yellow vinyl (optional, ours was to cover the sticky mess)
Black vinyl
Transfer tape
You’ll see some of the trucks are different images. I used the same trucks as those linked in the cupcake toppers linked above, but switched them out for Design Space images for the hat project so you don’t need to upload anything.
Cut the yellow and block vinyl designs, weed them and then layer the black vinyl on the yellow vinyl using transfer tape. They can then be used as normal stickers. Pull off one at a time and cut two snips into the sticker, up from the bottom. This allows it to follow the curves of the hard hat better. You can see a video of it in the reel shared below.
