You know those DIYs that you start, but then you leave them sitting half finished for AGES? These gorgeous cement candle holders are one of those! I’m so glad I’ve finally finished them and now they can be put to good use.
When I was dreaming up these candle holders I couldn’t find any tips for making the marble effect from cement, so I had to experiment a little to get it to a point where I was happy. If you don’t want the marble effect you can easily make them just using normal cement.
What you need:
Cement (Easy mix or if unavailable, cement and cement)
White cement (optional)
Black oxide (optional)
Polystyrene cups
1 inch (2.5cm) copper caps
1 inch (2.5cm) wide straight candles
Bowl and stick for mixing
Craft knife
Sand paper (optional)
Other Cement or Copper DIYs on Pure Sweet Joy:
If you like the copper or cement trend, why not pair it with another DIY too?
What to do:
Start by pressing the copper cap into the top of the cup. Use this mark to cut out a circle with the craft knife.
Push the cap through the hole in the cup, as far out as you’d like the copper to stick out from the cement.
Mix cement and pour into the cup. If you’d like a marble effect mix white cement (white cement powder + water), normal cement (quikrete + water or equal sand + cement + water to thick paste) and black cement (normal cement + black oxide + water). Place spoonfuls of each colour into the cup until it’s full. Use a stick to swirl the cement colours together. Lift the stick up and down within the mixture too. Tap the sides of the cup to bring any bubbles up to the top.
Allow the cement to dry before removing the polystyrene cup. If needed, rest the sides of the cup on small items the size of the copper cap to prevent the cap from moving up into the cement mix.
If needed, sand down the bottom of the cement candle holders to smooth the bottom. If you will be placing the cement candle holders straight onto a surface that may scratch, glue a thin piece of fabric, foam or cork to the bottom of the candle holders.

Instead of polystyrene use plastic cups, they don’t leave a pock mark behind and your holders have a smooth polished finish.
