I love a good kids activity, so when my daughter had a playdate this week I decided to set them up with a fun craft. These butterfly cupcake toppers would be so great for a birthday party too. Either they could be made before hand as decor, or as a party activity. Of course they’d also work as general decor or used as a pretty detail on a wrapped present.
Butterfly Cupcake Toppers // DIY
We made some cupcakes (with a cupcake box mix – it’s the best way!) and then while they were in the oven each girl got to choose two butterfly designs from a few designs I’d preselected from Cricut’s Design Space. The butterflies were done by the time the cupcakes had cooled. You can find my project here or you can select your own designs.

What you need:
Cardstock (Mine was about 170gsm)
Crayons, markers or anything to colour in with
Glue gun
Toothpicks or thin wire
I used my Cricut Maker 3, but any of the Cricut machines can do it perfectly.
What to do:
Open up the project here.
If choosing your own designs you need to ensure that all the details of the wings are connected to each other in some way. Copy/Paste each butterfly so that you have two copies of it. For one of the butterflies select “Hide all contours” after clicking the Contour button (bottom right).
Cut out your butterflies from the cardstock.
Decorate the full butterfly wing piece however you like.
Use a glue gun to place glue down the body of the decorated butterfly, on the decorated side. Place a toothpick in the glue and then add the top, detailed, butterfly on top.
Gently fold the top butterfly wings up a little, to give them a little lift.
Enjoy them!
