Decorating a home can be hard work (and down right expensive)! We’ve lived in our home for five years now, yet still the only properly decorated room is Bub’s room. If only looking at Pinterest would automatically turn my house into the home of my dreams!

That being said, a home is primarily a place for living in and making memories. Whether you have found a big property for sale in Durban or a small flat to rent in Cape Town, memories don’t depend on space or require fancy artwork or perfectly manicured gardens. They require you to be present, in the moment, enjoying your friends and family. Rather build up your décor slowly, knowing that it’s items you really want or that have meaning for you.

This pom-pom wall hanging is a special one for me. I originally made the pom-poms to use in Bub’s monthly photos for her first year. Rather than having an obvious “1” or “2”, I added a new pom-pom to the photo each month. It made for a subtle way to see how old she was and was also a handy distraction for her to play with while I tried to get a half decent shot. I’m a sucker for sentimental keep sakes, so turning the pom-poms into a wall hanging made perfect sense. Each time I look at it, it reminds me of the year that was, how much she changed in that year, and how far we’ve come.

Pom-Pom Wall Hanging

What you need:

• Pom-poms (my easy method – leave the long “tying strands” uncut)
• Dowel
• String
• Non-slip mat, shadecloth or other grid-like fabric (the size of your final wall hanging)

What to do:

1. Lay your pom-poms out as a rough guide of how you’d like them arranged.

2. Using the “tying strands”, thread them through the mat and tie them tightly. If you do not have these strands try to find the centre of the pom-pom and thread some cotton or string around it, tying a simple knot. The cotton can then be used to attach the pom-pom to the mat. Start by tying a simple knot and bow. This allows you to easily untie the pop-pom and move it, if needed.

3. Continue adding all the pom-poms, filling in empty spaces with smaller pom-poms.

4. Cut six to eight 20cm lengths of string (depending on how many loops you want on your dowel).

5. Loop the string around the dowel, as shown below.

6. Tie all the pieces of string to the top row of your mat. Make sure the lengths between the knots and the dowel are equal.

7. Finally, take a longer piece of string and tie it to ends of the dowel, leaving enough slack to hang up your new wall hanging.
